At Moseley, Geography is taught through a themed approach across the school. Geography is taught linking to the four subcategories; Locational Knowledge, Place Knowledge, Human and Physical Geography and Geographical Skills and Field Work. Children are given a wide range of opportunities to learn through research, first-hand experiences and practical activities. We believe that all children should have a strong knowledge of the world, be able to use their Geographical skills, make observations and understand the world’s processes and features.

Children are taught progressively across the school to gradually widen and deepen their knowledge of the world, it’s oceans, countries, continents and capital cities including the equator and poles. We believe children should have subject specific vocabulary to support them with their observations and comparisons. Themes are selected and taught in line with the National Curriculum’s Geographical programme of study. Teachers will also use Curriculum Companions to ensure children revisit and build upon their knowledge. Children in the Early Years are taught about Geography alongside the ‘Understanding of the World’ category from the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum framework.
Our goal is to inspire the children to learn more about the world around them. To do this, we provide many opportunities for children to learn through; trips in the local area and other geographical sites. Children are expected to make comparisons of local and wider locations and observe the changes that are made to some areas, over time. This develops the children’s understanding of the differences within different areas of the world and why some processes might occur. Geography is often taught in a cross-curricular approach; some key lessons that are taught will make curriculum links to Maths and Literacy supporting children in the development of some of their skills.
